Had the option to pursue a career in tennis – he once played against Andy Murray – but at the age of 13 decided against joining the national academy on the basis that it would have been too intense for someone so young.
Won the South African Amateur Championship in 2010, a trip he saved up for by working at the nine-hole course across the road from his home.
After winning the 2011 Spanish Amateur Open Championship he decided to turn professional.
Earned his European Tour card from Qualifying School in three consecutive seasons – 2015, 2016 and 2017.
